The sweet spot for theological education is in the midst of a diverse community of local Christians, searching the Scriptures and the tradition and discerning the call of God as they seek to faithfully witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ in their time and for their place.

Rev. Dr. Christopher B. James

About Us

Madison Learning Community is an initiative of University of Dubuque Theological Seminary offering seminary-level courses to Madison-area pastors, church leaders, and others eager to deepen ministry skills in a diverse Christian community committed to the local Church. Each semester we offer one course on Tuesday evenings, and deliberately build community among students that strengthens the local unity and witness of Christ's church.

Our first class, pictured here at their kick-off retreat, reflects our hopes for a learning community that embodies the beautiful variety of God's people in Madison. It included students from 9 denominations, 11 unique churches, ranging in ages from 26 to 82 and half of whom are persons of color.

“One thing that's really appealing about Madison Learning Community is the fact that it's Madison Learning Community. There are so many other wonderful places that you can go and learn from the East coast to the West coast. But, this is Madison! And to have opportunities of this caliber, the classes, the professors, right here in the university town of Madison. It just makes sense to have the Madison Learning Community as an emerging opportunity for those who are looking to learn and grow through the study of scripture.”

"I thought I was signing up for a class,  and instead, along with the class, there was this retreat where we were able to get to know each other and develop community and get to know the professors in a meaningful, personal way. There was really the development of community. It's more than just reading books and writing papers. It's really about learning about yourself and exploring your own faith and your own traditions and learning from the faith traditions of others and then applying them to the ministry that you're called to. It's definitely more than a class.

“The beautiful thing was to be learning from great professors that had two very different approaches, two very different faith traditions, but at the same time, so complimentary, a sort of kaleidoscope, blending of the tradition. I knew it was special. How many communities are there of learners and students and professors that bring that blend of approach and that unique combination and compliment of approaches and styles? Where else is this happening? I could think of nowhere else.
